T.K.D HISTORY

Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art and the national sport of South Korea. It has been developed over the course or more than 2000 years and is recognized in countries all over the world.

The word Tae Kwon Do can be broken into three Korean words. Tae which is "foot", Kwon is "hand" and Do which means the "art" or "way". Loosely translated, Tae Kwon Do means "the art of the foot and hand".

The World Tae Kwon Do Federation (WTF) was established by Dr. Un Yong Kim in 1973 with 78 countries as members. The World Tae Kwon Do Federation was recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1980 and Tae Kwon Do was presented as a demonstration sport at the Olympics in Seoul in 1988 and again in Barcelona in 1992. Tae Kwon Do became an official Olympic sport in the 2000 Sydney Games and continues to this day.

Tae Kwon Do as practiced today remains a true expression of the spirit of its developers – the Hwarang-Do. Its techniques and philosophy are included as standard school curriculum throughout Korea and are part of basic training for Korea’s armed forces.
